Many modern toilet bowl cleaners are made with dangerous chemicals such as hydrochloric acid and harmful phosphates. They have warnings like “fatal if swallowed” and” may cause cancer and birth defects.” Maybe you’ve seen these warnings and decided to switch to a natural toilet bowl cleaner because you don’t want your new baby to have three legs or maybe you’re concerned about your health.

So who has the best natural toilet bowl cleaner? After all, you want the most for your money and don’t’ want to sacrifice performance. Every year you have more and more options as green living becomes more popular. Here are some of the front-runners in the field today and how they hold up against one another.

Biokleen Soy Toilet Scrub

A thick white paste which sticks quite well to the bowl but being white it’s hard to see in a white porcelain bowl. It doesn’t require a soak-in period which is nice, but it doesn’t work all that great.

Seventh Generation Natural Toilet Bowl Cleaner

Seventh Generation as a nice piney scent that smells more natural than Pine-Sol. But I digress it is also not that great a cleaner. It was maybe a little better than Bookend.

J.R. Watkins Natural Home Care Toilet Bowl Cleaner

I’ve always liked Watkins products, and this one didn’t disappoint. It has a nice mild lemon scent and does a pretty good job although it recommends an overnight soaking for tougher stains, and the opaqueness makes it kind of hard to see what you’ve covered.

Earth Friendly Products Toilet Kleener

This one says is smells like cedar but smells more like a burnt orange although it is a mild smell. It’s thick and doesn’t flow well. You’re supposed to let it sit for about 10 minutes, but if you want the sitting to accomplish anything, you’ll have to spread it around with your toilet brush.

Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day Toilet Bowl Cleaner

Once again the scent isn’t quite like its name as this one smells like a pine tree rather than “lemon verbena, ”  but that wasn’t a bad thing just different. It’s blue which is easy to see and does a pretty good job.

Method Lil’ Bowl Blu

It has a pine/eucalyptus smell that’s not a bad scent, but it is overpoweringly strong.

It comes in an interesting curvy bottle not that that helps it clean better. But like the last one, it’s blue which is easy to see and does a pretty good job. (but maybe not quite as good)

Clorox Green Works Natural Toilet Bowl Cleaner

Although it’s a Clorox product, it contains no bleach. It has a mild lemon scent and is thick and green and easy to see. It does such a good job you’d think it was toxic. (but you still shouldn’t eat it even if you’re real, really hungry and the green stuff looks tasty)

I think the best of the tested were Clorox and Mrs. Meyer’s. So find yourself some coupons and go pick some up.
